Long ago, I played the demo of Spyro the Dragon on a hand me down playstation 1. I was so entertained that I completely forgot about my bowl of ice cream until my elbow landed in the melted slush. That moment started the dragon obsession that is still going strong, and although I had played video games before, it was the first time I could call myself a gamer.

Fast forward about 12 years. I have more responsibilties, and parents who want me to spend less time on games and more time on who knows what. Those carefree days are sadly over, but I remember them fondly, and I still have all three classic Spyro games. Every once in awhile, I pop those sacred disks into my playstation 2, and let the magic come rushing back. Lately, however, this has gained a new purpose.

My brother was born in 2003. He's finally the age where teaching him how to play video games isn't like trying to shove a watermelon down the sink. He was interested in Spyro, so I started him a file. Already he has caught an egg thief all by himself, gotten the alternate music to play 3 times, torched plenty of gnorcs and sheep, beat a boss, gotten all the dragons and gems in 4 different levels not counting the homeworld...with my help sometimes, but he's learning fast. He talks to Sparx the dragonfly just like I used to, among other things that also remind me of me back in the day.

I feel like a dragon elder, training the young dragons so they can survive on their own. I give gliding lessons and start quite a few sentences with "When I was your age..." The kid has potential. He really does.

So, to any of you with younger siblings, I highly recommend introducing them to the games of your childhood. You won't regret it!

Yes I know the background sucks...anyway, the above essay thing explains it all. The two dragons represent me and my little bro. Me as an artisan and him as a magic crafter, not because of personality, but because of our roles in the story. I drew the artwork, he's experiencing the magic of Spyro.
